My Story

My Story

I lost my mom as a young adult. She passed suddenly, after complications from a skin disease called psoriasis and a medication that she used to help control it affected her body in a negative way. No one was able to help her the way she needed. I always felt something bigger was being missed. All the correct tests and studies were performed, but yet, she couldn’t be saved.

Many years later, I’m still affected by the loss in many ways. I have realized more and more that losing her has motivated me to make changes in my own practice and help people in a different way, a more holistic way, getting to the root cause of my clients’ problems. I don’t believe in the “band-aid” approach in medicine, but getting to the true cause of the problem, even down to the cellular level, and addressing the issues one by one.

I know that I can’t bring my mother back, but I do hope that I can continue to change lives and help others optimize their health in a way that will make her proud.

Who am I? Why am I Qualified?

Who am I? Why am I Qualified?

I am a certified functional medicine practitioner and Nurse Practitioner with over 19 years of urologic experience. I obtained my background in health and medicine in a traditional way, by graduating first from Virginia Tech with degrees in biochemistry and chemistry.

After realizing I believed more in the nursing model, I shifted my career plan and obtained my nursing degrees from Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University respectively. After 10 years of practice, I went back to Johns Hopkins University to obtain my Doctorate in Nursing Practice focusing on urinary issues for women. I have practiced at the same urology practice for 19 years focusing my clinical practice in women (UroGYN) and children.

I have traveled the world and had the opportunity to go on many medical mission trips.   I’ve been to Brazil (down a boat in the Amazon — twice!), Belize, Guatemala, Peru and even helped with hurricane relief in Bay St. Louis in the U.S.  I’ve seen the care in other countries and been forced to work with very limited resources. It changed me, and my perspective on medicine, health and wellness.

Why the change? Why now?

Why the change? Why now?

After many years of practice in traditional medicine, I found a desire to learn more in order to help women in a multitude of ways, to address all of their needs, and help get to the root cause of their problems.

Treating women with pelvic issues for so many years, I discovered a trend… they all had gut issues and or increased stress and anxiety. I realized that there was more to the story than just the pelvic floor/urologic issues I was treating.  That’s when I discovered functional medicine, studied a bunch, read a ton, incorporated my learnings with current clients and received my certification in functional medicine from the School of Applied Functional Medicine.

I want to help more women achieve their optimal health by educating them, empowering them and inspiring them to make the necessary changes to reach their goals and getting to the root cause of their health issues.
