Eat the Rainbow!
Supplements: why do we need to take them? I used to be a firm believer that we don’t need them if we eat healthy…. well, then I became more educated, and learned why we DO need them.
Our soil is not the same as it used to be. Meaning our vegetables are not gaining the same nutrients from the soil that they used to (topsoil erosion). Stress too, (umm, who’s not stressed these days?) affects our ability to properly absorb our nutrients from our food by leading to damage to our intestinal lining. These are a few simpler examples of why we need supplements these days, outside of what we are eating in our food.
We’ve all heard of “eating the rainbow”, eating fresh fruits and vegetables for antioxidants and vitamins which is still a great way to get more nutrients in our diet and into our bodies to help boost our immune system and prevent disease.
What specifically helps boost our immune system?
Vitamins A, C, D and zinc can help. If you want to know what kind of supplements I personally recommend, message me as brand does matter (affects the absorption).
- Vitamin A is essential for cell growth and development, immune function and helps with skin healing. (found in milk, egg yolks, liver, orange and green vegetables)
- Vitamin C helps with blood clotting, cell membrane function, nerve impulse transmission (found in broccoli, brussel sprouts, citrus, peas and many other veggies)
- Vitamin D (most are naturally deficient) so important for our gut health, supports immune and cardiovascular health, maintains healthy bones and teeth (found in salmon, eggs, mushrooms and SUNLIGHT!)
- Zinc supports enzymes, immune system, DNA synthesis (found in oily fishes, organ meats, whole grains)
I hope this helps you and finds you all well!
